Description: Yes, there might be apple fruit bats bestowing knowledge here, and olive fruit bats extending the branch of friendship there, but not all varieties of fruit bat are benevolent and travelers to Spain would do well to heed warnings of the Sanguinelli. These blood orange bats are vampires, gorging themselves nightly on the juices of their fruit bat brethren with horrific greed and abandon. At sunset the vampire bats take flight, screaming and wailing from their roosting trees to terrorise nearby vineyards and orchards.
Background information: The sanguinello (plural sanguinelli) is one of three main varieties of blood orange and was discovered in Spain in 1929. Blood oranges live up to their name with their noticeably red-tinged flesh and were originally (and wrongly) thought to be hybrids of oranges and pomegranates!
